Biography

I’m Diogo and I am currently serving as a Bioprocess Engineer at NIBRT. My journey into bioprocess began during my undergraduate studies at UNESP in Brazil. I was particularly drawn to the interdisciplinary aspects of Biotechnology Engineering and the challenge of scaling up biological processes for industrial applications. This interest led me to pursue a master's and PhD in Chemical Engineering at UFSCar, due to its prestige having the highest rating (7) by CAPES (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel).

During my master's, I designed a hollow fibre bioreactor for mesenchymal stromal cell culture, which I presented at the National Bioprocess Symposium. This experience deepened my interest in bioprocess innovation. My PhD research focused on optimizing culture conditions for cell spheroid formation, contributing to advancements in cancer drug screening. This work culminated not only in my dissertation, but also in a co-authored review paper on cell spheroids in biomedical research.

I then transitioned to industry, where I first worked at Lobov Scientific, giving support in using several biotechnology research equipment, further developing my technical abilities. Following that, I started working at Ourofino Animal Health, leading vaccine production technology transfer and ensuring our processes met industry standards, applying all my bioprocess engineering skills.

Teaching and Mentorship

I have always enjoyed teaching and mentoring future engineers and scientists. I have taught Mathematics to students preparing for college entrance exams and supervised courses in Biochemical Engineering and Applied Biochemistry.

Personal Interests

Outside of work, I enjoy activities that engage both my mind and body. I have a long-standing interest in PC gaming, particularly MMORPGs, which provides a creative outlet. Staying active through regular gym sessions helps me maintain focus and energy. Recently, my wife and I moved to Ireland, and we are enjoying settling into this new environment and embracing its culture and opportunities.
